Tree Frog Profile: North’s RCPM Program Perfect Fit for Nick Hartmann
Real estate has been part of Nick Hartmann’s life for as long as he can remember. Growing up in Black Diamond, Wash., his family’s business centered on owning and managing properties in King County. So, it was no surprise that when he was looking at career options, property management was high on his list. But in what capacity? Where to start?
There are myriad avenues for someone interested in residential and commercial property management, and Nick found his path at North Seattle College.
“I chose North Seattle College exclusively because they offer an associate’s degree in real estate, the only community college to offer this degree, that feeds directly into the bachelor of applied science (BAS) degree in Residential and Commercial Property Management (RCPM),” Nick explained. “It was the perfect program for me given my background.”
Nick said the program meets his needs by working within his schedule to complete classes while providing a great platform to excel in the property management industry.
“My experience so far has been incredible,” he said. “I love the flexibility of attending classes at night, which allows me to still have a full-time job.”
Speaking of jobs, Nick noted that North’s RCPM program was responsible for introducing him to JLL, a commercial real estate company, where he garnered an internship that turned into a full-time position.
“Without the RCPM program, I would not be where I am today,” he said. “Long term, I plan to climb the corporate ladder at JLL as far as I can go. I wish to stay within the commercial property management industry.”
His advice for those interested in a similar career path?
“If you are interested in this industry, this program can not only give you a great foundation of knowledge, but can also connect you with industry professionals to ensure the money you spend on your degree will pay for itself in this extremely in-demand industry,” said Nick, who added that North is a great option for other career paths as well.
“If you are a working professional looking to expand and open new doors with a degree of your choosing, North is a great place to start,” he said. “You don’t have to give up what you currently do to obtain a degree from North Seattle College.”
Nick also knows that support is critical for students, no matter what journey you’re on. He credits professors Lyle Crews and Mark Potter for sharing their real-life experiences as part of the learning process.
“I truly look forward to their classes each week just to have the opportunity to share something I heard about or a current event that relates to real estate and property management,” he said. “Their unwavering ability to turn that topic into a discussion about the current class’s topic is remarkable, and I attribute that to how I’m able to learn so much from this program.”
The support at North goes beyond the classroom instruction. Nick noted that BAS program advisor Cate O’dahl has been a huge help to him.
“Cate has been great at helping me through my journey and has been there every step of the way for support. I couldn’t do it without her,” he said.
His biggest takeaway from his overall experience at North?
“I wish I had started sooner,” Nick said. “I never did super well in school, but at North, I excelled due to the high level of support and options that North Seattle offers.”
