Seven students earning a range of degrees proudly represented North Seattle College at the Women Entrepreneur Business Solutions Competition in the University of Washington’s Foster School of Business on Feb. 1, and their ideas won!

Students from North were in three of the teams that tied for first place: Mariyam Abdulkarim, Maila Jenner, Jane Madiz, Anna Kharzhevskaia, Khat Khongor, Michelle Sentevski, and Roger Tang. Thanks to the enthusiastic marketing of Rayne Renney from the Impactful Investing Club, this year NSC had three times as many students participating. The teams had fun tackling current business problems and developing innovative solutions in real time.

Here’s how the competition worked: During breakfast on the day of the competition, graduate and undergraduate students were asked to form a team and spend the day acting as consultants. Their final deliverables were a white paper and presentation that explained their creative solution to the real business problem posed by women entrepreneurs of the participating companies. Each team won $250 and earned valuable feedback while networking with local business owners.

The businesses in the competition represented a range of industries: Maps.ai, Naturally Contained, LLC, and Tiziana Mexicana.

Professor Alif Laila Tisha (Tish), the NSC business faculty member involved in organizing the event and ensuring it was open to undergraduate students, said, “I have full faith that students at North will continue to put forth incredible ideas and keep on winning.”

Nausica Zorzi, interim associate dean, NSC Business and Accounting programs, added, “As I reflect on another great accomplishment by our NSC students, I continue to remain inspired by their resilience and evermore motivated by the life-changing work all the members of our institution advance in our community.”
