Update on Water Outage--March 5

Dear Campus,

Facilities crew are working as quickly as possible to restore water to buildings in the north end of campus, specifically in the Library, Instruction Building Child Care Center, Arts & Sciences Building and Wellness Center.

Earlier today, facilities members met with a contractor to begin repairs on the burst water pipe and evaluate how quickly water can be restored. The crew has been authorized to work overtime through 10 p.m. tonight and is currently drilling into the parking lot to begin repair on the broken pipe. We do not anticipate water being restored within the next 24 hours, however, we unfortunately won't have a clearer sense of the timeline until the crew can properly assess the pipe. Several factors, like depth, age, and construction of the pipe will determine the speed of repair.  We should have more information first thing tomorrow morning and will communicate when we do. We recognize this is an enormous inconvenience and disturbance to classes, labs and day-to-day work and we are doing everything within in our power to address this promptly.  Below is an overview on how certain areas may be affected and what can be done in the interim.

Instructional areas
Instructors whose classes or labs are directly affected are asked to please work with their Deans to coordinate either the relocation of classes or a cancellation if needed. The Office of Instruction will make every effort to quickly accommodate requests. It is at the discretion of each individual faculty member to cancel a class if reasonable accommodations can't be found.

Unfortunately, restrooms in the Library, Instruction Building, Childcare Center, Arts and Science Building and Wellness Center remain unavailable due to the water outage. These restrooms have been locked until water is restored. Water and working restrooms are available in the south end of campus in College Center Building, HSSR, the Education Building and OCE&E. We are also currently exploring locations near the affected buildings where portable toilets could be brought in.

Your safety is our first priority. We have contacted both the Seattle Fire Department and the Department of Health to alert them of our situation.  We will remain in communication with them as we have updates and alert you to any changes based on the recommendations we receive from these entities.

Childcare Center and Wellness Center
These centers will remain closed until water can be restored.

Thank you for your patience during this disruption. We commit to communicating transparently and regularly as updates become available.
