Learn to cycle safely this summer

This summer North Seattle Community College premieres a new PE Special Topics course (PEC 298) “Smart Cycling: Go By Bike,” co-taught by Bernie Kay and Josh Miller.

This new course covers bicycle equipment safety, bicycle handling skills, hazard avoidance maneuvers, rules of the road, traffic law, health and fitness concerns. The League of American Bicyclists “Smart Cycling: Traffic Skills 101” book will be provided to students free of charge. The program has a limited number of loaner bikes and helmets available to students who do not have the appropriate equipment to participate.  This summer the course will appear at NSCC as PEC 298 and for the subsequent quarters will be PEC 154 “Smart Cycling: Go By Bike.”

The course at North is offered by the Bicycle Alliance of Washington, which is establishing bicycling education programs and teaching credit-bearing classes at several local colleges. Participating colleges include North Seattle Community College, Bellevue College, Olympic College in Bremerton, and Pierce College in Steilacoom.  Students may enroll in courses for four quarters at each of the four participating colleges. There is a parallel Go By Bike project to educate parents of elementary school students.

Go By Bike is a collaborative program providing bicycling safety education for adults in communities around Puget Sound.  A program of the Bicycle Alliance of Washington with funding from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA),  Go By Bike is administered by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT).

Please contact Josh Miller with any questions about the program.
