It’s International Education Week at North

International Education Week 2011

International Expo on November 14 kicks off the week-long celebration

Along with thousands of other colleges and universities around the globe, North Seattle Community College is celebrating International Education Week (also known as IEW) from Monday, November 14 through Friday, November 18, 2011.
The purpose of IEW is to promote global understanding and cooperation between students in the U.S. and abroad. The College is sponsoring a wide array of events and activities in honor of this global project, with opportunities for lots of student, faculty and staff involvement.
International Education Week started in 2000 as a joint project of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education. All institutions and individuals are invited to participate in this worldwide celebration. This year, celebrations marking this special week are taking place at schools in more than 100 countries.
At North, the celebration of IEW kicks off with an International EXPO on Monday, November 14.  Located in the Baxter Events Center, this free, all-day event includes food samples, country displays, demonstrations and lessons in Chinese calligraphy and origami, a display of the “World through the Senses” photo contest entries and winners, information about study abroad opportunities, international music and much more.
In addition to the EXPO, North will hold a variety of presentations, panel discussions, information sessions and activities on topics pertaining to international culture and global exchange throughout the week. These events cover a wide array of issues related to global exchange, including what it’s really like to live and work abroad as well as different ways you can engage in global volunteerism. Other topics include using coconut oil as biofuel (as is being done in the Marshall Islands in the North Pacific), teaching English in China, learning about Red Cross Disaster Services,  and what it’s like to have a Fulbright Scholarship to study in the Middle East.
Like Monday’s International EXPO, all events take place on the first floor of North’s College Center building. Look for activities in Baxter Center, in the Green Room (northeast corner of the 1st floor) and in the Cafeteria, which offers a special menu each day to celebrate International Education Week.
The cafeteria will also be the location for International Night, a big party on Friday night that marks the culmination of International Education Week 2011 at North. The evening features a flag procession and student performances of song, dance, acrobatics, and includes music, food and fun. Unlike the week’s other events, this one has a charge ($5) and tickets must be purchased. They are available in advance in the International Programs Offices (CC 2357, 2nd floor of College Center building).
A full listing and description of each day's International Education Week activities is available on North’s website calendar at You may also want to “friend” us on Facebook, where all these events (and more) are listed with times, locations, descriptions and details.
