North Seattle Community College to Offer New Bachelor of Applied Science Degree in International Business
North Seattle Community College received approval today from the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (WSBCTC) to offer a new Bachelor of Applied Science degree in International Business that will provide area residents with an affordable path to family-wage jobs in Seattle’s international trade arena.
The new bachelor’s degree program – North’s first – helps ensure that our city remains at the leading edge of innovation by preparing the workforce of today and the workforce of our future. As part of the Seattle Community Colleges, North is helping lead the way in offering an attainable education and providing the employment skills that will keep our city and our region economically vital.
“Seattle's strengths as a center for international trade match the strengths of the students of North Seattle Community College and the Seattle Community College district,” said Mark Mitsui, president of North Seattle Community College. “Our students have the capacity to bring a diverse set of skills, abilities and knowledge to this important sector. We look forward to contributing to the vitality of our region and creating greater opportunities for our students through this new degree program and the related industry partnerships.”
In an environment of increasing emphasis on international commerce at the state and federal level, Washington stands out as one of the most trade-dependent states in the U.S. — the largest exporter per capita. The greater Seattle area is the Pacific Northwest hub for international import and export trade, logistics and transportation. But the demand for qualified workers far exceeds the number currently completing programs to fill those jobs. With today’s approval from the WSBCTC and the approval in December from North’s accrediting agency, the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, North is posed to respond to this critical need in the employment arena.
The new degree program begins in September 2013 with a cohort of 25 students. The program will accommodate students with varying backgrounds and interests by leveraging existing business and accounting coursework and experience with upper division courses that provide a well-rounded business skill set. Program graduates will be ready to work in an international arena in sales, scheduling, finance, manufacturing, marketing or jobs in freight forwarding.
With the baccalaureate option, students will be able to move from typically non-transfer career training business pathways, like North’s General Business Associate of Applied Science degree and the International Trade certificate, as well as several other business-related programs at North and neighboring colleges. The program will also provide an academic pathway for incumbent workers in the local international business, trade and commerce arena to upgrade their skills and be eligible for higher paying managerial jobs requiring a baccalaureate-level education. Prior work experience can also receive credit – up to 25 percent of the 180 credits required for the IB degree.
Responding to the needs of local international businesses, the International Business curriculum focuses on cultural competency, communication skills, a strong business base in finance and accounting, and hands-on experiences that include a practicum to ensure a baseline foundation in a second language and an internship.
