North Seattle Community College’s Opportunity Center for Employment and Education (OCE&E) is featured as Project of the Month in the July 25, 2012, Daily Journal of Commerce. The article by Clair Enlow highlights the new building’s architectural innovation and unique adaptation to the Late Brutalism style of North’s existing 1970 campus structures — in light of the building’s function as a center for integrated employment, education and social services.

Learn to cycle safely this summer

This summer North Seattle Community College premieres a new PE Special Topics course (PEC 298) “Smart Cycling: Go By Bike,” co-taught by Bernie Kay and Josh Miller.

 This new course covers bicycle equipment safety, bicycle handling skills, hazard avoidance maneuvers, rules of the road, traffic law, health and fitness concerns. The League of American Bicyclists “Smart Cycling: Traffic Skills 101” book will be provided to students free of charge. The program has a limited number of loaner bikes and helmets available to students who do not have the appropriate equipment to participate.  This summer the course will appear at NSCC as PEC 298 and for the subsequent quarters will be PEC 154 “Smart Cycling: Go By Bike.”

Funding from City Helps P-Patch Garden Grow

The NSCC P-Patch Community Garden, a project of North’s Sustainability office, recently received a $20,000 grant from the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods. Consultants from the LA studio, LLC,  will hold a third and final design charrette June 13 at 6:30 pm. Ground-breaking will take place in July.

Chris Lu, White House Cabinet Secretary, Will Speak at Commencement June 15

Christopher P. Lu, Assistant to the President and Cabinet Secretary, will give the commencement address at North Seattle Community College’s 42nd commencement ceremony on Friday evening, June 15, 2012.

In his role as Cabinet Secretary, Mr. Lu serves as President Obama’s primary liaison to federal departments and agencies, helping to coordinate policy and communications strategy. Lu also serves with Department of Education Secretary Arne Duncan as co-chair of the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

North's MOU Ceremony Honored Veterans

North Seattle Community College was the 11th of 34 community colleges to sign the Partners for Veteran Supportive Campuses Memorandum of Understanding on April 25. This ceremony represents North's continuing commitment to serving veterans who are transitioning from military life to college life and beyond. About 65 people attended the event, 25 of whom were student veterans.

Stormwater Treatment Plan Wins 27K in Tax Credits

NSCC has been awarded $27,300 in tax credits--a 29 percent reduction of stormwater taxes-- for 2012 and subsequent years based on a treatment plan to clean, slow and infiltrate stormwater on campus. The credits are a direct result of a campus-wide collaboration process which allowed students to apply for tax credits through Seattle Public Utilities (SPU).
