Two North Seattle College students will be honored at a state-wide reception on Thursday, March 21 as members of the 2019 All-Washington Academic Team

North students Fernanda Jardim de Souza and Veronica Carpenter will be among 59 students who are being recognized at the reception for their high academic achievement, community involvement and service to their campus. Sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges, the 59 members of the 2019 All-Washington Academic Team represent all 34 community and technical colleges in the state.

Washington Governor Jay Inslee will serve as a keynote speaker at the event at South Puget Sound Community College in Olympia and has signed a proclamation naming March 21, 2019 as All-Washington Academic Team Day.

Congratulations to Fernanda and Veronica! Read more about them in these student bios:

Fernanda Jardim de Souza
Fernanda Jardim de Souza moved to Seattle from Brazil in 2014, with 40 lbs of luggage and dreams to make a difference. Now, as her graduation from North with a general business AAS degree draws closer, her impact is profound. Fernanda works tirelessly as a volunteer for the Gender Equity Resource Center, serving all ages, gender expressions, sexual orientations and backgrounds regardless of immigration status. She also helped create North’s first ever student-run Food Pantry.

Veronica Carpenter
Veronica Carpenter’s greatest motivation to succeed stems from learning about obstacles facing others and helping them overcome. It’s something she’s done since she was little, starting with volunteering at her father’s nonprofit to teach piano to students with disabilities. The North Seattle College associate degree student plans to continue helping others by working as a computer programmer. Her goal as a future programmer is to use technology to make education more convenient, accessible and fun.
